While reps for the reality TV star did not respond to request for comment, The Berkeley County Coroner's Office confirmed the news by saying that Allison Calhoum Dennis died in her home.

AceShowbiz - Kathryn Dennis' family is grieving. It's been reported that her mother, Allison Calhoun Dennis, passed away on Wednesday, August 7 following a battle with an extended illness. She was "surrounded by family" in her South Carolina home at the time of her death. Allison was 59.

Reps for Kathryn did not respond to request for comment, but a source close to the "Southern Charm" star confirmed the news on Thursday. "Their family requests privacy while they mourn with the sad loss," so the source said to PEOPLE. "They're very private people and they want their time to cope."

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office also confirmed the story to Radar Online. George Oliver told the publication, "Our office was notified and there was a hospice nurse there. We do not respond to a home death. The hospice nurse contacts our office. They provide us with the funeral home details. The funeral home goes to the residence and takes the person away. She chose to stay home surrounded by family."

The cause of death has yet to be known, but Allison was battling ovarian cancer prior to her death. She moved in with Kathryn during her battle. "She was sick for a year and a half and I was taking care of her," Kathryn told PEOPLE back in April. "She's since been living with me, essentially. It's great to have her around, especially because she's so good with the kids. She's amazing. She's the best mom I could ever hope for with everything."

Elsewhere in the interview, the reality TV star also talked about her "incredibly close" bond with her mother. Calling Allison her "best friend," Kathryn gushed over her mother, "She stuck by me through so much. I don't know what I would do without her."
