The 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' actor is reportedly in talks to star as King Triton in the upcoming live-action remake of the classic animated movie.

AceShowbiz - Javier Bardem is close to snatching the throne in the new "The Little Mermaid (2020)". The Academy Award-winning actor is reportedly eyed to play King Triton in Disney's live-action remake, with multiple reports confirming that he's currently in negotiation stage for the role.

Should Bardem sign up for the movie, he will be Halle Bailey's on-screen father. The young singer of contemporary R&B duo Chloe x Halle has been officially cast in the lead role of Ariel, who is the daughter of King Triton.

Meanwhile, it's recently reported that Harry Styles is in talks for the role of Prince Eric, who becomes the title character's human love interest after she rescues him from drowning. Other names rumored to join the project are Melissa McCarthy who is linked to the role of villainous sea witch Ursula, "Room" star Jacob Tremblay who is said to voice tropical fish Flounder, and "Crazy Rich Asians" actress Awkwafina who is reportedly in negotiations to lend her voice for seagull Scuttle.

Disney's "The Little Mermaid", which will combine both live-action characters and CGI, will be directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Nine"). Composer Alan Menken will be teaming up with "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to create a few new tunes for the soundtrack. Miranda will also serve as a producer on the film, alongside his "Mary Poppins Returns" director Marshall.

Prince Eric didn't sing in the 1989 animated movie, but the royal character was given a handful of songs when "The Little Mermaid" became a Broadway musical. It's currently unknown if the movie will also feature music from the Broadway play. "The Little Mermaid" is scheduled to begin production in early 2020.

Bardem won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the psychopathic assassin Anton Chigurh in Coen Brothers' film "No Country for Old Men" (2007). He has also received critical acclaim for his roles in films such as "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and "Skyfall", for which he received a BAFTA and a SAG nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Bond villain Raoul Silva. He recently starred in Spanish-language psychological thriller "Everybody Knows" (2018) alongside his wife Penelope Cruz and has landed a role in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movie adaptation as Stilgar.
