AceShowbiz - Lionsgate is securing another world-class star for its upcoming "Saw" reboot. Samuel L. Jackson has just been added to the cast of the new installment of the hit horror franchise, joining Chris Rock who has been earlier tapped to take a lead role in the project.
Rock will play a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes. Jackson will play Rock's father. Additionally, "The Handmaid's Tale" star Max Minghella has been cast as Rock's partner William Schenk, and Marisol Nichols will portray Capt. Angie Garza, Rock's boss.
Confirming the cast, Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, says in a statement, "We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the 'Saw' canon and we can't wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of 'Saw' on full tilt."
Details of the plot are kept under wraps, but Lionsgate teases that it will offer deviously treacherous traps, clever clues and the edge-of-the-seat suspense that fans expect. Filming has begun with Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed the second, third and fourth "Saw" movies, serving behind the lens from a script written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg.
Longtime "Saw" filmmakers Mark Burg and Oren Koules are back to produce the untitled Saw project, with the franchise original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell on board as executive producers. The studio eyes an October 23, 2020 release date for the movie.
Development on the reboot was started with Rock's idea. The comedian/actor, who is a big fan of the franchise, came with premise for the new project, which Drake previously described as "chilling" and "fantastic." He added, "This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous 'Saw' films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise."
