Having reversed her default decision in the civil suit case against the 'Ignition (Remix)' hitmaker, Cook County Associate Judge Moira Johnson tells his lawyers that they have only a week to file a response.

AceShowbiz - R. Kelly has been given one last chance to defend himself in a civil suit filed against the embattled singer by one of his sex abuse accusers.

The "Ignition (Remix)" hitmaker has been set a deadline of 26 June to respond to legal action filed by the alleged victim, who claims she entered into a year-long sexual relationship with Kelly in the late 1990s after meeting at a restaurant while celebrating her 16th birthday.

The plaintiff, only identified as H.W. in court papers, was initially handed a default judgement in late April after Kelly's attorneys were accused of ignoring all court summonses regarding the case, in which the female is seeking more than $50,000 (£39,400) in compensation.

However, the musician's legal representatives subsequently protested the ruling, and insisted their client had never been properly served, leading Cook County Associate Judge Moira Johnson to reverse her default decision.

Defence attorneys have since requested the suit be put on hold while Kelly faces criminal prosecution for sex charges, but during a hearing on Wednesday, June 19, the judge ordered Kelly's legal team to first file a response to at least acknowledge the case.

The singer did not attend the hearing, reports the Chicago Tribune.

The woman involved in the civil suit, now 36, is one of four alleged victims referenced in the 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse filed against Kelly by Illinois prosecutors earlier this year. Three of the females were reportedly underage at the time of the encounters.

The 52-year-old was also hit with 11 new sex crime charges in late May, relating to an alleged 2010 incident with a minor.

He has pleaded not guilty to all accusations.
