AceShowbiz - Singer Farruko has dodged a jail term and been sentenced to probation after failing to declare a large sum of cash to customs officials in his native Puerto Rico.

The "Krippy Kush" singer, real name Carlos Efren Reyes, was initially detained in April, 2018 at the airport in Isla Grande, where security forces searched his bag and found over $50,000 (£39,500) in unreported cash in his luggage and shoes.

Farruko, who had declared on customs forms that he was carrying less than $10,000 (£8,000), was released at the time, but the following day, had a warrant issued for his arrest and was taken into custody.

He initially pleaded not guilty to lying to federal authorities, but on Thursday, June 13, officially changed his plea and confessed to the crime.

The judge decided to ignore prosecutors' request to sentence Farruko to 16 months behind bars, and instead gave him three years of probation, while calling for the seizure of $41,000 (£32,300) of the smuggled funds, reports The Associated Press.

After the punishment was handed down, the 28 year old took to Instagram and made it clear he had learned his lesson.

"I can only say that I learned from this and (it has) made me stronger," he shared in the post, which was originally written in Spanish. "In life you have to become a man and be responsible for your actions".
