The film adaptation of David Guterson's 1999 novel, which follows a widower on a soul-fulfilling journey, will be co-written by the author himself and directed by 'Lane 1974' helmer S.J. Chiro.

AceShowbiz - Actors Mira Sorvino and Tom Skerritt are heading "East of the Mountains" in a film adaptation of the 1999 novel.

"Alien" star Skerritt, 85, will portray a widower diagnosed with terminal cancer, who decides to leave behind his daughter, played by Sorvino, and embark on a soul-fulfilling journey into the Columbia Basin Province in Washington to live out his final days.

Original author David Guterson co-wrote the screenplay, from which writer/filmmaker S.J. Chiro will direct.

Production is set to begin in Washington later this month, reports Deadline.com.

It's not the first Guterson book to be turned into a movie - his 1994 release, "Snow Falling on Cedars", was made into a film in 1999, starring Ethan Hawke, James Cromwell, and Richard Jenkins.
