AceShowbiz - "The Ferryman" and "Tootsie" were among the top winners at the 2019 Drama Desk Awards in New York City on Sunday night (June 02).
Jez Butterworth's "The Ferryman" was named Outstanding Play, while Sam Mendes picked up the award for Outstanding Director of a Play, and Tom Glynn-Carney took home the title of Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play.
The production was also awarded Outstanding Sound Design in a Play.
The stage adaptation of "Tootsie", based on Dustin Hoffman's 1982 movie about a struggling actor who dons drag to land a top gig on a soap opera, was another four-time winner, with Santino Fontana picking up the Outstanding Actor in a Musical honour, Robert Horn landing Outstanding Book of a Musical, and David Yazbek scoring two prizes for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics.
Meanwhile, "The Prom" was crowned Outstanding Musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" won Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Play went to "The Waverly Gallery", and its star, Elaine May, claimed Outstanding Actress in a Play.
"Uncle Vanya" star Jay O. Sanders was awarded Outstanding Actor in a Play, Stephanie J. Block claimed Outstanding Actress in a Musical for "The Cher Show", "To Kill A Mockingbird" star Celia Keenan-Bolger was named Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical went to Ali Stroker for "Oklahoma!".
"Hadestown" star Andre De Shields earned Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, while the show also earned Rachel Chavkin the Outstanding Director of a Musical honour.
Other notable awards went to famed designer Bob Mackie for Outstanding Costume Design for a Musical for "The Cher Show", and "Kiss Me Kate" choreographer Warren Carlyle for Outstanding Choreography.
The annual Drama Desk Awards, which celebrate productions both on and Off Broadway, were hosted by actor Michael Urie at Manhattan's Town Hall.
