Dubbed 'S&M2', the September show will see the heavy metal band working together with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas to celebrate the grand opening of the new Chase Center arena.

AceShowbiz - Heavy rockers Metallica are reuniting with the San Francisco Symphony onstage to mark the 20th anniversary of their unique collaboration.

The two acts joined forces back in 1999 to stage the groundbreaking "Symphony & Metallica (S&M)" shows, reworking the band's hits to incorporate orchestral accompaniments, conducted by the late Michael Kamen.

The gigs were recorded and released as a concert film and a live album, with the revamped "The Call of Ktulu" track earning them the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Now the musicians are coming together again to help open the new Chase Center arena in San Francisco, California with a one-off performance to coincide with the original "S&M" show's anniversary.

Famed conductor Michael Tilson Thomas will make a special appearance to take charge of part of the "S&M2" show, which will be held on 6 September, during the first week of his final season as the San Francisco Symphony Music Director.

The 2019 performance was announced at a press conference at the new venue on Monday, March 18, when Metallica bandmates Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield joined Michael Tilson Thomas and arena officials to share the news.

"This is beyond exciting on so many fronts," said Ulrich. "The fact that San Francisco is finally getting a much needed world-class arena, the fact that Metallica get to be part of the opening celebration, the fact that we get to revisit 'S&M' 20 years later, and the fact that we get to share the stage not only with the San Francisco Symphony once again, but with the legend himself, MTT, as he kicks off his final year as music director here in San Francisco. This is mind-blowingly awesome... bring it on ASAP!!!"

Tilson Thomas added, "The San Francisco Symphony is delighted to be a part of the Chase Center's opening week, and to perform once again with Metallica to recreate the magic of the historic S&M concerts."

"I'm happy to join with my friends in Metallica to make this an extraordinary only-in-San Francisco music event."

In addition to songs from featured on the "S&M" album, the upcoming gig will also feature Symphony versions of Metallica tracks released in the two decades since their last collaboration.
