The 'Thor: Ragnarok' actor is reportedly the first and only choice to replace Smith, and has met with director James Gunn about taking on the role of Deadshot.

AceShowbiz - The role of Deadshot may not be vacant for long despite Will Smith's recent departure from "Suicide Squad 2". Just days after it was reported that the actor would not return for the sequel which is currently titled "The Suicide Squad", it's now said that Idris Elba is in talks to fill the void left by Smith when he exited the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba met with James Gunn, who is on board to write and direct the "Suicide Squad" sequel, on Friday, March 1 about taking on the role of the assassin antihero. The British actor is reportedly "the first and only choice" for Gunn and Warner Bros.

Smith, who led the ensemble of the 2016 movie, dropped out of the upcoming movie due to scheduling conflict. He and the studio allegedly reached the decision amicably and there's no hard feeling between both sides.

Instead of a direct sequel, "The Suicide Squad" has been dubbed as a relaunch. It has been reported that Gunn's take on the franchise will take it "in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors." The project will reportedly stay true to Gunn's vibe and will be in a similar vein with his "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies.

No cast member is confirmed for the upcoming movie so far, but Margot Robbie, who portrays Harley Quinn in the first movie, is expected to return for the second installment. She is currently filming the spin-off, "Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)". "The Suicide Squad" is slated to arrive on August 6, 2021 in the United States.

Elba's recent blockbuster movies include Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Avengers: Infinity War", in which he plays Heimdall. He is starring in "The Fast and the Furious" spin-off "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham. He will also be seen in "Cats", Tom Hooper's feature film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name.

Interestingly, Elba has appeared among names suggested by Twitter users as the perfect choice to play Richard Williams in "King Richard", instead of Smith. Debate sparked on the internet after reports emerged that the "Aladdin" star would star as Serena Williams and Venus Williams' father in the upcoming biopic. Most of them took issue with Smith's skin color, which is deemed too light to play Williams.
