Warner Bros. has given a go to the follow-up of the 2014 sci-fi movie, with the studio trying to bring back director Doug Liman.

AceShowbiz - An "Edge of Tomorrow" sequel is officially in the works, more than four years after the first movie was released in 2014. Warner Bros. has given a green light to the project, which is expected to bring back director Doug Liman as well as lead stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

According to Deadline, Cruise and Blunt won't commit to the sequel until they see a script to their liking. Matthew Robinson ("The Invention of Lying") has been hired to write the screenplay along with Liman.

The original movie, based on Japanese light novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, follows Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience who finds himself caught in a time loop that sends him back to the day preceding the battle every time he dies. He teams up with Special Forces soldier Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who teaches him fighting skills to increase their chance at winning the battle against the extraterrestrial invaders through the repeated days.

The movie was a box office disappointment, opening to less than $100 million in North America despite Cruise's star power. It went on to gross over $370 million worldwide against its budget of over $175 million.

Still, Liman, Cruise and Blunt have previously expressed their interest in making "Edge of Tomorrow 2" . Liman teased his idea for the sequel in 2016, "That is the only sequel that I'm considering doing. And it's because first of all the story is so amazing - much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film - and second of all, it's a sequel that's a prequel."

Later in 2017, Liman shared more details of his idea, saying that the sequel might be smaller than the first and focusing more on Cruise and Blunt's characters than the action. "I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I'm like, 'No, a sequel should be smaller,' " he shared. "You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don't need as much action, and in the case of 'Edge of Tomorrow', people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation...so we can do way more focus on Tom's character and Emily Blunt's character."

"And there's a third character in the sequel that's gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that. I don't need an action sequence every two minutes," Liman went on teasing.

In early 2018, Liman said they were close to getting the sequel into production. "It's not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don't really care if it's good or not," he claimed. "If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be."

It's not clear, though, if the idea that Liman has been sharing will be used for the script which is currently in the works.
