The Los Angeles residents unsurprisingly take to social media to share some photos and videos as well as their bewilderment upon the rare phenomenon.

AceShowbiz - Something magical recently happened in Los Angeles. On Thursday morning, February 21, snow fell in Southern California, a place that is known for its year-long sunshine, mild temperatures, desert mountains, and gorgeous beaches, sending everyone into frenzy.

The freakout is understandable though, since it hasn't snowed in the city since January 1962, according to the Los Angeles Public Library archives. On Thursday, the snow fell in places at 1000 feet above sea level. With that being said, neighborhoods which haven't experienced a decent winter wonderland in decades even got some flecks.

People took to social media to share some photos and videos as well as their bewilderment upon the rare phenomenon. Actor Jerry O'Connell posted on Twitter a video of him outside while the snow was falling. "It is snowing in Calabasas right now. OK? Calabasas, California, where the Kardashians live, where Jordyn used to live -- it is snowing right now," he said in the video. "It is snowing in Calabasas. Crazy."

Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations also shared a video of the rare phenomenon, adding that the snow would make the road slippery. "As of 1250hrs, snow is falling at the 1500’ level in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu, CA. Roads will be slippery. Please drive safely! #LAweather @NWSLosAngeles @CHPWestValley @CaltransDist7."

While snow is often seen in the San Gabriel Mountains, it never reaches the city, thus the endearing reactions from Los Angeles people. Kristen Stewart, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard, explained to BuzzFeed News that the snow fell might be because either the snow is falling too fast for it to melt into rain or it's only falling through a thin layer of above-freezing temperatures, or both.

"When precipitation forms it may form as snow," Stewart shared. "As it falls it may not melt into rain whether that's a very thin layer of warmer temperatures or if it's falling fast enough."

Meanwhile, Lisa Phillips, another with the National Weather Service, said this particular storm was the result of a low pressure system that traveled south from Canada. Unlike typical storms that move from west to east over the Pacific Ocean, this system remained inland and did not have a chance to warm up over the milder water, maintaining enough cold air to produce low elevation snow.

The snow didn't last long though, as Los Angeles soon was back to its usual sunny self.
