AceShowbiz - Charli XCX and Troye Sivan are taking their fans to the dance floor with their new party anthem. Earlier this week, the British singer-songwriter announced that she would be premiering a collaboration with the Australian singer on Friday, October 5. The song was released once the clock struck midnight as promised.
Just like what the title suggests, the song is filled with references to all the cool things in that year. Among them are Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time", Michael Jackson and Nike Airs. The collaborators can be heard singing about how they wish to go back to that time when they can just hang out without minding their life problems.
"Yeah, I remember back home/ Best friends, all night, no phone/ No cares, I was dumb and so young/ My room singing Michael Jackson," Troye rhymes, before Charli chimes in, "Wish that we could go back in time/ Get memories/ Maybe we could do it tonight/ Tonight's the night."
The cover art of the single itself is a reference to 1999's film "The Matrix", with Troye dressed as Neo in dark sunglasses, a black overcoat and dyed black hair. Meanwhile, Charli channels Trinity by rocking similar outfit against a bright green background.
Talking about how the collaboration came to happen in an interview with Junkee, Charli noted she had wished to work with him ever since she listened to "My My My!". When the song first came out, she admitted that her Twitter account "just became a Troye Sivan stan account."
"I'm a big fan, as you can tell, and I had this song '1999' and I got it played for him and he liked it which was really cool. It was funny because I always liked the song but I wasn't sure whether it was totally for me," she recalled. "When Troye was like, 'No, I really like it, I would love to do something on it,' I was like, 'Okay, great. I have to keep it. Troye thinks it's cool, it's probably cool, 'cause Troye's really cool, so great.' "
