The regular host of 'The View' joins the likes of Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell in the cast of the Cathy Yan-directed superhero film.

AceShowbiz - Rosie Perez has been cast to portray Renee Montoya in Margot Robbie's "Birds of Prey" blockbuster.

Perez joins a cast that includes Robbie, who will reprise her "Suicide Squad" role as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, aka Dinah Lance, after reportedly competing against Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez for the coveted part.

Montoya is an openly gay Gotham City Police Department detective, who becomes superhero The Question.

Robbie has been developing the movie for three years and will produce the film under her Luckychap production banner.

She recently revealed she first started pitching the new movie concept while she was still shooting "Suicide Squad" with Will Smith and Jared Leto.

"It was three years ago, half-way through 2015 when I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley," she told Collider earlier this year. "I was like, 'Harley needs friends. Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a stand-alone film. She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang.' "

"I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space."

Cathy Yan will make history by becoming the first ever female Asian director to take charge of a superhero film.

"It was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible," Robbie added, "but, at the end of the day, male, female, the best director gets the job, and Cathy was the best director. So we're very excited to dive into it."

The film is set to be released in February, 2020.
