Some people, however, don't believe that he regrets what he said about slavery being a choice.

AceShowbiz - Kanye West has opened up about the backlash to his ill-advised slavery comments by comparing himself to freedom fighter Harriet Tubman (August 21).

The "Yikes" rapper was slammed by critics and activists alike in May when he made an appearance on news show TMZ and suggested the enslavement of African-Americans in U.S. history was a "choice" they made.

Speaking candidly about his ill-advised remarks in a new radio interview on Wednesday, August 29, Kanye compared himself to abolitionist Tubman and slave rebellion leader Nat Turner, writing off the comment as an offshoot from his bipolar disorder and a misinterpretation of semantics.

"It sounds like a choice to me, to Kanye West," he stated during an appearance on Kendra G's WGCI 107.5 radio show in his native Chicago, Illinois. "I'm not a historian, I'm Kanye West."

"Even if it was worded incorrectly, in the white man's tongue - maybe I could have danced or I could have spoken Swahili - because even the fact that we're having to have this conversation in English is a form of slavery. It's not even our language, bro."

Kanye then became emotional as he offered up an apology for upsetting fans with his comments.

"I have never really approached or addressed the slavery comment fully," the "Heartless" hitmaker admitted. "It's not something for me to overly intellectualise, 'cause this ain't nothing to be smart about. This is about the fact that it hurt people's feelings, and the way I presented that information."

Fans offered up mixed responses to Kanye's radio show apology on Twitter, with some trashing the rapper for dancing around the meaning of his words.

"Omg he didnt apologize! He apologized that u felt bad about it! Fool! (sic)," one tweeter wrote, while another offered up forgiveness for the star, adding: "I can appreciate his genuine apology this time and that he learned from this."

Kanye's new interview came hours before it was announced that the rapper, who became a free agent and started representing himself ahead of his slavery comment controversy, had rehired Scooter Braun and John Monopoly to co-manage his career again, according to Billboard.

He split from longtime manager Izvor Zivkovic in March, announcing the end of the business partnership in a tweet.

"I no longer have a manager. I can't be managed," Kanye wrote.

Braun also manages the careers of Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen, among others.
