AceShowbiz - Ethan Hawke has credited his kids from his marriage to Uma Thurman with helping him deal with depression after the actors split.
The "Boyhood" star was on a roll professionally after landing an Oscar nomination for Training Day when his personal life fell apart in 2002.
Hawke and Thurman, who wed in 1998, divorced two years later and the movie star admits the couple's kids, Maya and Levon, helped him through the dark days - just by needing their dad.
"That's the wonderful thing about children is they just need you every day," Ethan told GQ magazine. "It gives your life balance. Meaning your whole life isn't just about yourself."
But he opens up about his marriage split to the publication, revealing his career went sideways.
"In a lot of ways, it could have been the beginning of something. It was the best moment of my career," Hawke explained. "Like, maybe, maybe, you could be commercially viable. But I got divorced and my personal life fell apart.
"I don't know if you feel this way, but when you're depressed, it's really easy to see everything that is fake about other people and life, and I just started seeing all that. How phony celebrity was, how phony everything is."
And he recently told news show Entertainment Tonight he is still a little jaded when it comes to Hollywood, adding, "I pay my alimony with my acting, I pay my kids' health insurance with my acting. I pay everybody's tuition with my acting. I'm helping various charities with my acting.
"I've become a professional, and I never wanted to be a professional. I kind of hate professionals."
