The majority of 1,700 fans agree director Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic is the best of the beasts, beating out 'Deep Blue Sea' and 'The Shallows'.

AceShowbiz - Jaws has beaten Deep Blue Sea and The Shallows in a new online poll to find the best shark movie ever made.

Officials at on-demand video streaming service FandangoNOW launched the survey to coincide with the release of Jason Statham's new blockbuster The Meg, which hits cinemas this week, ends August 10, and there were no surprises when it came to fans' top pick.

Almost 1,700 fans visited fandangonow.com to take a bite out of the shark poll, and the majority agreed director Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic was the best of the beasts.

Samuel L. Jackson's Deep Blue Sea came in second and Blake Lively's The Shallows, released in 2016 and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, ranked third on the chomp-down.

Open Water and last year's (17) 47 Meters Down rounded out the top five.

"It's always safe to go back to the water if you're watching from the comfort of your couch," says Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. "Fans can confront their fears with these classic thrillers, and we can't get enough of them, especially during the summer months."

It wasn't just shark thrillers that made the cut - DreamWorks Animation's 2004 family favourite Shark Tale also landed on the list, as did the so-bad-it's-good Sharknado TV movie, which became an unlikely fishy phenomenon upon its release in 2013.

The film, starring Tara Reid and Ian Ziering, has spawned five sequels, with the final instalment in the series, The Last Sharknado: It's About Time, hitting TV screens later this year.

The top 10 on FandangoNow's Greatest Shark Movies Ever Made poll is:

1. Jaws

2. Deep Blue Sea

3. The Shallows

4. Open Water

5. 47 Meters Down

6. Jaws 2

7. Shark Tale

8. Sharknado
