Something seemingly goes wrong with the mysterious pharmaceutical trial as Dr. James Mantleray (Justin Theroux) asks one of his team members, 'What did you do?'

AceShowbiz - Netflix has unearthed the first trailer for "Maniac", its highly anticipated new series featuring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Emma's Annie Landsberg and Jonah's Owen Milgrim appear to be two of subjects in a mind solving attempt in a drug trial led by Justin Theroux's Dr. James Mantleray.

When Emma's character asks whether it's a therapy, Dr. Mantleray insists that it is a "science." He further explains, "Once you begin to appreciate the structure of the mind, there's no reason to believe that anything about us can't be changed. Pain can be destroyed, the mind can be solved."

Before Dr. Mantleray and his team start the mysterious pharmaceutical trial, Sally Field's character asks him how many of his patients have ended up catatonic. "Zero," he replies. "Roughly."

The trailer later sees Owen and Annie, alongside a slew of people, being put in a deep sleep in which they are thrown in multiple scenarios, seemingly based on the pictures they have been exposed before. The first scenario sees Owen, who dons a suit. sitting in the back seat of a car in the middle of the woods before encountering Annie, who's styled in a 60s fashion style. "My mind is playing tricks," he says.

Also glimpsed in the trailer is a scene of the two strangers in what looks like an ominous board meeting. Annie later is seen as a mom with children having a meal in a sunny kitchen table. "This is a multireality brain magic s**t," Annie tells Owen as scenes of her in a medieval costume and Owen as a giant flicker on the screen.

Something seemingly goes wrong with the trial as Dr. Mantleray says to one of his team members, "Something's wrong. What did you do?" to which the team member responds, "Every time I separate them they just find their way back together." The chaos prompts Sally's character to rage, as she yells at Dr. Mantleray, "You're not protecting those people in there!"

Set in a world somewhat like our world, in a time quite similar to our time, "Maniac" tells the stories of Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie's disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment--a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), claims he can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak--draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.

Created by writer Patrick Somerville and directed by Cary Fukunaga, the 10-episode series is set to arrive on September 21 on Netflix.
