The Chewbacca depicter takes to Twitter to share a picture of him lying in a hospital bed, writing alongside it, 'I've been planning and going through some spinal surgery to improve my mobility.'

AceShowbiz - Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew is recovering from spinal surgery.

The star, who played wookie Chewbacca in every Star Wars movie up to and including The Force Awakens, took to Twitter on Tuesday, July 24, to explain his absence from social media and update fans on his health.

"Sorry, I've been quiet as of late," he wrote alongside a picture of himself lying in a hospital bed. "I've been planning & going through some spinal surgery to improve my mobility.

"It's been a success & I'll be spending the upcoming weeks recovering. A big thank you to the doctors, staff, my family & friends that have helped me through this."

Mayhew has also announced he will not be making an appearance at the London Film & Comic Con this weekend, July 28-29, as a result of the surgery and his ongoing recovery.

The British actor has battled poor health in recent years - in 2015 he was hospitalised with pneumonia.
