After receiving criticism from Piers Morgan about the amicable statement she released when she split from Liam, the former Girls Aloud admits that the statement was 'cringeworthy.'

AceShowbiz - Cheryl has admitted her break-up statement with ex-boyfriend Liam Payne was "cringeworthy" following criticism from TV host Piers Morgan.

The "Fight For This Love" singer announced she was parting ways with the One Direction star, who she shares 16-month-old son Bear with, in a statement posted to her Twitter page earlier this month.

It came under fire from former tabloid editor Piers, who questioned why couples put out amicable statements during seemingly unamicable times.

"It's always weird when celebrity couples split up saying they have so much love for each other," he blasted while presenting his British breakfast show "Good Morning Britain". "If they love each other that much, why are they splitting up? They should be more honest and just say, 'We hate each other'."

In his column for the Daily Mail, Piers has since revealed his comments garnered a fiery text from Cheryl, 35, and prompted a text exchange that addressed her feelings towards the PR move.

"I'm so sorry you didn't like my statement, Piers - perhaps I should have texted you the intimate details in chronological order as it unfolded," her message reportedly read, to which Piers, feeling a "rare pang of guilt", then apologised.

Explaining that she was just joking with her pal, the star allegedly added that while the statement was embarrassing, she harbours no hatred towards the father of her child.

"I'm just messing. I hate those kinds of statements too, so cringeworthy. But we don't hate each other. It just didn't work out," she reportedly replied.

Cheryl and Liam, who began dating in 2016, posted near-matching statements to their Twitter accounts following months of split rumours and called for privacy during the difficult time.

"We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family," Cheryl's version read. "Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together."
