During its panel at SDCC, it was also announced that 'Star Trek: Discovery' would be getting a four-episode spin-off titled 'Star Trek: Short Treks'.

AceShowbiz - The Discovery crew will continue their journey on the space. CBS All Access' "Star Trek: Discovery" debuted its season 2 trailer during the space show's panel at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 20. In addition to the new footage, "Star Trek: Discovery" announced that the sophomore season would arrive in early 2019.

The almost-3-minute trailer features the adventures of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green and fellow the U.S.S. Discovery crew members. Anson Mount's Enterprise Captain Cristopher Pike character is also being introduced in the first trailer. "I'm here to take command of the Discovery under the regulation 19 section C," Pike says to Saru.

Later, the trailer glimpses some action-packed scenes with Michael going to a mission to seemingly help Mr. Spock, though no actor has been announced to play the role. Tig Notaro's Chief Engineer Denise Reno also briefly appears in the trailer.

The footage concludes with a scene of Captain Pike and other crew members casually going into a lift which has a new Alien character named Linus on it. Burnham seemingly notices that Linus doesn't look well as she asks the creature, "Linus? You okay?". Before she finishes her sentence, Linus makes a gesture which says that he catches a cold before sneezing to a crew member.

During the panel at SDCC, it was also announced that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be getting a short-form spin-off titled "Star Trek: Short Treks". The 4-episode series is set to be launched in the fall and will roll out monthly beginning in December to tie Trekkies over until Discovery‘s Season 2 premiere in January.

Each episode will consist of a stand-alone story in 10-15 minutes. According to producers, It will offer an opportunity for deeper storytelling and exploration of key characters and themes that fit into "Star Trek: Discovery" and the expanding Star Trek universe.

"Discovery" actor Rainn Wilson will reprise his role as Harry Mudd in an episode which he will direct. Meanwhile, Aldis Hodge will star in another episode as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship. Other shorts will give fans a deeper insight into Saru's (Doug Jones) backstory as the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, and Tilly's (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner.
