The purge sees Twitter bosses shutting down an estimated 58 million fake accounts.

AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have been hit hard by a new purge aimed at cleaning up Twitter.

Gomez has lost over a million followers, while Lovato has dumped hundreds of thousands as social media bosses attempt to cut back on suspicious accounts set up by people, who then follow the pop stars.

Nick Jonas and Beyonce are also among the biggest celebrity victims of the clean-up campaign, launched to restore trust in the platform.

The purge, which began last week, ends July 13, follows one from 2017, during which Twitter bosses shut down an estimated 58 million fake accounts.

In May, they suspended over 70 million suspicious users.

The company's bosses hope to crack down on dodgy accounts as part of an effort to curb misinformation and harassment, according to the New York Times.
