Lucas Hedges plays the son of a Baptist pastor who is sent to a gay conversion therapy program after he is outed to his parents at the age of 19.

AceShowbiz - Focus Features has released the first trailer for "Boy Erased" from "The Gift" director Joel Edgerton. Based on a true story, the movie follows Lucas Hedges' character Jared, who struggles to accept himself as a gay teenager while being raised in a religious community.

Set to new original song "Revelation" by Troye Sivan and Jonsi, the trailer sees Jared being sent to a gay conversion therapy program after he comes out as gay in front of his parents, played by Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.

"Jared, I want you to do well," Crowe's character tells his son. "I want you to have a great life. I love you. But we cannot see a way that you can live under this roof if you're gonna fundamentally go against the grain of our beliefs."

"I think about men," Jared admits. "I don't know why, and I'm so sorry." The video then sees Jared suffering from the program's cruel routines, which involve masculinity training sessions and beatings for nonconformists. "You cannot be born a homosexual," says Edgerton's homophobic character. "This is a lie. It's a choice."

But Kidman's character appears to have a change of heart after witnessing her son's sufferings. "They say sometimes you've got to hurt a child in order to help them," she says. "But a mother knows when something isn't right."

According to the official synopsis, Jared is the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program - or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. The movie is billed as the true story of one young man's struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.

Also starring Madelyn Cline, Cherry Jones, Flea, Troye Sivan, Joe Alwyn and more, the drama is set to hit U.S. theaters on November 2.
