The triple Oscar-winning actress was amazed by her co-star's performance in 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again', saying Cher 'lifted the lid off the place' when she sang 'Fernando' on the set.

AceShowbiz - Meryl Streep is adamant Cher steals the spotlight in "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again".

The triple Oscar-winning actress reprises her role as Donna Sheridan in the follow-up to 2008 hit film "Mamma Mia!", which is based on the popular musical featuring Swedish pop group ABBA's songs.

An ensemble cast including Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth also appear in the movie, but Meryl is certain that music icon Cher's role as her character's mother Ruby Sheridan will truly capture fans' hearts.

"It was fantastic," smiled Meryl to Entertainment Tonight at the London premiere of the film on Monday night (July 16). "I came on the set the day that she sang (1976 ABBA song) 'Fernando'. That was my first day... And she just lifted the lid off the place! I mean, she steals the movie!"

At the film's debut, Cher also described how great it was to work with 69-year-old Meryl again. The pair previously acted together in 1983 biographical drama "Silkwood", about nuclear whistleblower and activist Karen Silkwood.

"We've stayed friends all these years. I cannot believe that, but (Silkwood) was my first film, and she helped me," the 72-year-old recalled. "I mean, she was unbelievable, because I had no idea what I was doing."

"Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" hits cinemas from July 19.
