Godzilla Fires 'Atomic Breath' in First Look at 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters'

Another official photo from the 'Godzilla' sequel shows Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown's characters for the first time.

AceShowbiz - The first look at "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" reminds that no one should undermine the terror that can be brought by Godzilla. The monster is highlighted in one of the official photos released via Entertainment Weekly. In the image, Godzilla looks menacing as it unleashes "atomic breath."

Asked to describe what "atomic breath" is, director Michael Dougherty says he cannot do it "without giving away too much." He coyly adds though, "But it takes place at a very key moment and it’s a sort of call to arms."

After the events in 2014's "Godzilla", people live with fear that there may be other similar creatures on the planet. "The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting," Dougherty explains. Godzilla hasn't been seen since that destructive finale, "but there's paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we're threatened by others like his kind," he continues.

The sequel's title clearly hints that there are indeed more big beasts out there, including the three-headed King Ghidorah, the giant insect Mothra and another flying monster, Rodan, who could create hurricane-force winds. "Rodan's been kind of a sidekick character, but I've always had a soft spot for him," says Dougherty. "In a lot of ways he's more powerful than Godzilla. He's like this winged A-bomb. I think we've done him justice."

Dougherty also teases the possibility of the movie introducing 2020's "Godzilla vs. Kong". "It's not like we're bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs," so he claims.

The second official picture, meanwhile, features two new human characters. They are Dr. Emma Russell, played by Vera Farmiga, who is described as a scientist working for the beastie-hunting organization Monarch, and her daughter Madison, portrayed by "Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown. According to Dougherty, the pair are kidnapped by "a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures."

Also starring in the sequel is Kyle Chandler as Mark Russell, Emma's ex-husband and Madison's father. Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins return as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham, respectively. Together, the three will embark on a rescue mission.

Written by Dougherty, Zach Shields and Max Borenstein, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" will be released on May 31, 2019 in the United States.
