Renner will portay Detective 'Twitch' Williams, whose unconventional crime solving methods prove to compliment Spawn's demonic powers.

AceShowbiz - "The Avengers" star Jeremy Renner is stepping back into the world of comic book adaptations to join Jamie Foxx in "Spawn".

Foxx was first attached to the project in May, when he was slated to portray the title role - a murdered former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) black ops team member, who is double crossed in hell after he agrees to become a Hellspawn warrior, so he can be reunited with his wife.

Renner will star as Detective 'Twitch' Williams, whose unconventional crime solving methods prove to compliment Spawn's demonic powers and aid him in his fight against those who wrong him.

The project will serve as the directorial debut of writer Todd McFarlane, who penned the film's source material, while horror producer Jason Blum has also boarded the action film for his Blumhouse production company.

"As a first time director, I wanted to surround myself with the most talent and the most skilled people I can on all fronts...," McFarlane told Deadline.

Addressing Renner's casting, he shared: "I'm a huge fan of his. The character doesn't need to be a bodybuilder or GQ handsome. I was looking for somebody who's a person you've met before; I needed someone who can pull off the grief of an average human being. I've seen Jeremy do that in more than a few of his movies. He was at the top of my list, just like Jamie."

Production dates for "Spawn" have yet to be announced.

This will be the second "Spawn" movie to hit the big screen, following 1997's film, starring Michael Jai White.
