Many concertgoers are angry because his delayed performance affects the event finale's big fireworks display.

AceShowbiz - Rap superstar Snoop Dogg angered parents at an Independence Day celebration in New Jersey after starting his show an hour late, delaying the event finale's big fireworks display.

The Gin and Juice hitmaker was booked as the headliner for the Jersey City Fourth of July Experience, held to mark the American holiday on Wednesday, July 04, and had been due to perform for 50 minutes from 8.30pm local time, with fireworks expected to light up the night's sky immediately after his set.

Many families with young kids planned to wait around for the grand finale, but Snoop's tardiness meant his gig didn't start until much later than scheduled, and he even extended his time onstage to squeeze in a surprise appearance by singer Akon.

A number of disgruntled mothers and fathers took to Twitter to complain about the delay to the city's mayor, Steven Fulop.

"Epic fail tonight at @jerseycity waterfront," one parent moaned. "@SnoopDogg started late & pushed back the fireworks show. Thousands of JC (Jersey City) parents & kids await fireworks. School night. The ppl (people) of JC are super annoyed & bummed and r bailing. @StevenFulop ur residents are not ur biggest fan right now (sic)."

Fulop took note of the grumbles as he responded to the scheduling mess online after the event, but insisted there was little organisers could have done.

"We do our best. That's all we can do," he tweeted. "I know after 5 years in this job that I can sadly never please everyone as sometimes issues surface. All in all I think people had a great time - it was a long day with lots to juggle."

Snoop has yet to comment on the reason for his late start, but he shared a snap of himself from the show on Instagram on Thursday, July 05.

"About last night," he wrote in the accompanying caption, although he accidentally tagged the photo's location as "Louisiana" instead of New Jersey.
