The upcoming family drama is based on real-life experience of Nic Sheff, who struggles with drug addiction, and his father David, who desperately tries to help him.

AceShowbiz - The first trailer for family drama "Beautiful Boy (2018)" was released by Amazon Studios on June 27. Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, the film stars Academy Award nominees Steve Carell from "Foxcatcher", Timothee Chalamet from "Call Me by Your Name" and Amy Ryan from "Gone Baby Gone". The actors play a father and a drug-addled son in "Beautiful Boy" respectively.

"Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, 'Beautiful Boy' chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years," the official logline reads.

The story revolves around a drug-addicted teenager named Nic Sheff, portrayed by Chalamet. Nic's addiction ruins his relationship with his father, David, who can't accept the fact that his son is a different person now. David desperately tries to guide his son to recover, but Nic makes it difficult for him.

In the first minutes, the trailer shows how Nic and his father seem to be distant with each other when they're meeting at a diner. Later, the scene implies that Nic is telling his father about his struggle with methamphetamine addiction. Not too long after, they argue and Carell's character David Sheff seems confused about what is happening to his son.

"You think that you have this under control," David assumes. "I'm attracted to craziness and you're just embarrassed because I was like this amazing thing, like your special creation or something, and you don't like who I am now," Nic accuses his father for disagreeing with him about his addiction. "Yeah, who are you, Nic?" the father replies, not recognizing his son anymore. "This is me, dad, here, this is who I am," Nic desperately tries to make his father understand.

The next scenes show Nic and his father spending time together at a beach and in a car with Carell's voice narrating along. "There are moments that I looked at him, this kid that I raised, who I thought I knew inside and out, and I wonder who he is," he says.

The footage also reveals when David gets frustrated because he is unable to guide his son. "My son is out there somewhere and I don't know what he's doing. I don't know how to help him," David yells at a person in the trailer.

Several scenes near the end of the trailer see David and Nic hugging each other. It appears that David's successfully reconciled with his son.

The film is set to be unleashed on October 12 in select cinemas in the U.S.
