Showtime Network bosses have given an eight-episode order to producers Tom McCarthy and Jason Blum's new series, which is based on Gabriel Sherman's bestselling book 'The Loudest Voice in the Room'.

AceShowbiz - Russell Crowe's weight gain has finally been explained - he's set to portray controversial Fox News founder Roger Ailes in his U.S. television debut.

The Oscar winner has been spotted looking heavier than usual in recent snaps published online, and now it seems he has been packing on the pounds in preparation to play the disgraced former TV mogul, who died last year (17).

Showtime Network bosses have given an eight-episode order to producers Tom McCarthy and Jason Blum's as-yet untitled limited series, based on Gabriel Sherman's bestselling book The Loudest Voice in the Room.

Sherman also covered the sexual harassment scandal that led to Ailes' departure at Fox News for New York magazine.

Landing Crowe as Ailes is a coup as far as David Nevins, the president and CEO of Showtime Networks, is concerned, insisting, "This limited series promises to be a defining story for this era."

The late Ailes was largely responsible for shaping Fox News into the TV force it has become today, but his legacy and reputation were tarnished following a series of sexual misconduct allegations.

Blum's new series, starring Crowe as the news man and media advisor to presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, will reportedly focus on the last 10 years of his life, up to and including the role he played as an adviser to the Donald Trump presidential campaign following his departure from Fox News.

It won't be Gladiator star Crowe's first challenge to play a real-life person - he earned Oscar nods for portraying Jeffrey Wigand in The Insider and John Nash in A Beautiful Mind, and he also tackled the role of boxer Jim Braddock in Cinderella Man.
