AceShowbiz - Paul McCartney played a secret gig for a handful of fans in his native Liverpool, England on Saturday, June 09.

The former Beatles star took to the stage at the Philharmonic pub, leaving 50 locals stunned.

McCartney was spotted driving around the city with The Late Late Show host James Corden in a Range Rover, suggesting Macca will be the comedian's next celebrity guest on the Carpool Karaoke segment of his U.S. talk show.

The duo also took selfies outside some of Liverpool's biggest landmarks, including Penny Lane and The Beatles statue at the Pier Head.

Sources told editors at local newspaper the Liverpool Echo TV bosses at SRO Audiences were offering local people the chance to be in the audience at the Philharmonic for a secret set from a "global superstar".

McCartney's performance reportedly included two new songs, ahead of a rumoured new album.

Sean Kennedy, who was at the gig, wrote on Twitter: "I have just seen Macca live. I'm on Carpool Karaoke. My life is complete. Thank you".

Another fan posted: "My head has fallen off. Just seen Paul McCartney play a gig to 50 people in the Philharmonic pub in Liverpool. Absolutely made my life. Thank you for the music Paul. The Beatles".

Word quickly spread that the music icon was in the city, and crowds gathered outside the Philharmonic pub hoping for a glimpse of the superstar.

There has been no indication as to when the Carpool Karaoke will air in the U.S. or the U.K., but Corden previously said that McCartney would be his ultimate guest on the hugely successful TV segment, which has included Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Stevie Wonder, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, One Direction, Adele, and Ed Sheeran.
