Based on David Walliams' novel, the upcoming musical is about a crossdressing schoolboy.

AceShowbiz - Robbie Williams and his songwriting partner are penning the songs for a musical adaptation of David Walliams' book "The Boy in the Dress".

The comedian and talent show judge's story about a crossdressing schoolboy, which features pictures by legendary illustrator Quentin Blake, came out in 2008 and was turned into a BBC TV film in 2014.

Now David's gender fluid tale is coming to the stage courtesy of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) - and Robbie and his longtime collaborator Guy Chambers are writing the tunes for the show.

Revealing the news on Twitter, David wrote, "I am over the moon that my book with @QuentinBlakeHQ 'The Boy in the Dress' is being adapted into a stage musical with a book by Mark Ravenhill & songs by @guyachambers & @robbiewilliams."

He added that the show would open next year and would be directed by the RSC's Artistic Director Gregory Doran.

According to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, the new musical will be part of the Christmas season the company hosts at its base in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. If successful it will reportedly transfer to London's West End in 2020.

Robbie is following his old Take That bandmate Gary Barlow by moving into theatre, as the "Let Me Go" musician co-wrote "The Girls", a musical based on the film "Calendar Girls".

Gary also launched The Band, a jukebox musical utilising Take That's songs, last year. The cast for the show were discovered via "Let It Shine", a BBC reality TV series judged by him, Dannii Minogue and Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp.

Although Robbie is no longer a member of the band, he did rejoin his old pals for the finale of the talent search.
