The 'Logan' director is set to direct and write the standalone movie centering on the bounty hunter.

AceShowbiz - A standalone "Star Wars" movie centering on Boba Fett is reportedly back on track with James Mangold attached to the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Logan" director is set to direct and write the new spin-off.

Boba Fett was first introduced in 1980's "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back" and returned in "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" as the mercenary who hunts down Han Solo for crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Despite very limited time onscreen, the character grew to become one of fan favorites. Jeremy Bulloch played the character in the original trilogy.

Prior to Mangold's involvement, Josh Trank was rumored to work on a Boba Fett movie to follow "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story". However, after he was fired from the project, Lucasfilm decided to set "Solo: A Star Wars Story" as the next film.

Recently, there were reports that Simon Kinberg, who has worked on "X-Men" films, was working on the upcoming spin-off. It's now reported that Kinberg is still attached to the project and will co-write the script with Mangold and also produce the Boba Fett film. Mangold and Kinberg previously worked together on the last Wolverine film.

Details of the Boba Fett movie storyline are kept under tight wraps as Lucasfilm and Disney won't make any official confirmation regarding the latest development.

Lucasfilm is also developing other spin-offs based on famous characters in the franchise, including Obi-Wan Kenobi. Stephen Daldry is reportedly in negotiations to direct the project, but no writers are working on the script so far.

Meanwhile, the latest standalone movie, "Solo", opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 25. It has Alden Ehrenreich taking the lead role as young Han Solo, with Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany and more also in the cast.
