The gown is made to to celebrate the diversity of the sci-fi franchise and the actress' landmark casting in the new film.

AceShowbiz - Thandie Newton paid tribute to every black "Star Wars" character in the franchise's history as she walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, May 15. The British beauty portrays interstellar criminal Val in director Ron Howard's new Han Solo spin-off, "Solo: A Star Wars Story", and she donned a stellar couture Vivienne Westwood dress to attend the screening on the French Riviera.

Thandie's stylist Erin Walsh explained how the gown came about in a post on Instagram, revealing the 45-year-old wanted to celebrate the diversity of the sci-fi franchise and her landmark casting in the new film. "For tonight's #StarWars premiere (at Cannes), Thandie had the brilliant idea to make a dress covered in a print with photos of iconic black @starwars characters!" the fashion professional gushed on the picture-sharing app in a caption attached to a sketch of the dress. "She wanted to celebrate her role in the iconic history of the franchise!! She is the first black woman onscreen in a @starwars movie with a leading role."

New York-based fashion photographer Christian Hogstedt captured the images used for the eco-friendly gown by taking photos of toys from Thandie's private collection. "@christianhogstedt photographed the action figures from her personal collection and (designer) @viviennewestwood made a SICK print on a gown that's totally ethical given the guidance of @ecoage and @liviafirth... more on this to come, but have a peek at the sketch and up close on the print!!!" Walsh gushed.

Thandie isn't the only star kicking up a storm at Cannes with out-of-the-box fashion choices. Jury member Kristen Stewart defied the festival's heels-only policy by walking barefoot on the red carpet on Monday, May 14, while her jury president Cate Blanchett also caused waves by recycling her her 2014 Golden Globes gown at the festival last week.
