The new crime drama, which has been given a series order by ABC, marks Fillion's return in starring role after 'Castle' abruptly ended in 2016.

AceShowbiz - "Castle" vet Nathan Fillion is heading back to the small screen. The actor stars on a new ABC light crime drama "The Rookie", which has been given a series order by the network. In addition, the network has unearthed the first teaser of the new series.

The teaser opens with Fillion's John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, entering the building of Los Angeles Police Department Mid-Wilshire Station as someone says in voiceover, "We got a new blood this morning." Officer Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson) is later assigned to ride with "the 40-year-old rookie." The teaser later gives a brief glimpse of Nolan trying his best as a new police officer.

The official logline reads, "Starting over isn't easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force's oldest rookie, he's met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can't keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he'll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life."

Also starring on "The Rookie" are Richard T. Jones ("Santa Clarita Diet") and Mercedes Mason ("Fear the Walking Dead") who play Sergeant Wade Grey and Captain Zoe Andersen respectively. The cast also includes Alyssa Diaz, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter and Titus Makin.

"The Rookie" marks Fillion's return in starring role after "Castle" abruptly ended in 2016. Prior to this, Fillion appeared on some TV shows, including "Modern Family" and "A Series of Unfortunate Events", in guest-star roles.

"The Rookie" will air in the fall of 2018 on ABC.
