The third installment of the Warner Bros. flick will be based on the script written by 'Narcos' co-creator Chris Brancato.

AceShowbiz - While a new season of BBC's "Sherlock" remains unclear, fans of the famous detective movie that is based on Conan Doyle's books will be greeted by Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes soon. Warner Bros. announced that its big-screen "Sherlock Holmes" series is getting a third installment.

Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as the titular British detective. Meanwhile, Jude Law once again will play Sherlock's famous sidekick Dr. Watson in upcoming "Sherlock Holmes 3". There is no word about who will serve behind the lens.

"Sherlock Holmes 3" will be based on the script written by "Narcos" co-creator Chris Brancato. Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are serving as producers. Village Roadshow is also returning as co-producer. Rumor has it, the movie will be produced on a budget under $140 million.

The upcoming flick is set for a December 25, 2020 release date, almost nine years after the previous sequel, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows", which premiered in 2011. Also starring Noomi Rapace, Jarred Harris, Stephen Fry, Kelly Reilly and Paul Anderson, the movie earned $545.4 million at the worldwide box office.

Meanwhile, the first movie, featuring Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood, and Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, raked in $524 million in global market back in 2009. The first two movies were both directed by Guy Ritchie.

Also joining "Sherlock Holmes 3" on 2020's Christmas Day release is Illumination/Universal's "Sing 2". Prior to that, an untitled Disney live action movie will open on December 23, 2020 with James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar 2" premiering on December 18. It is quite interesting since the first "Sherlock Holmes" movie also arrived not long after "Avatar" premiered during the 2009 holiday season.
