The guitarist of the rock band has made it clear that he's in favor of repealing the abortion laws as he thinks that it's time to put the mothers first.

AceShowbiz - U2's the Edge has urged the band's Irish fans to vote to repeal the nation's abortion laws. The guitarist will be on tour when his country folk hit the polls on May 25 to vote whether or not to repeal the country's Eighth Amendment, which was signed into law in 1983.

The amendment of the Constitution of Ireland recognizes the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn, thus banning abortions. The rocker insists it's time to put mothers first and he has made it clear he is in favor of repealing the Eighth Amendment.

"It is huge and I know there is a huge divergence of opinion on it and I accept that and it is hard to take a stance without having to acknowledge there is another side to it, but I am for it and I support repeal. It is the smart thing to do," he tells Independent.ie.

He continues, "I think we acknowledged that it's a very emotive issue and I think that we acknowledged that we have very strong feelings on both sides. I personally am in favour of repealing, but I do understand why people might have a problem with that. The important thing is to vote."

Meanwhile, the rocker is expecting a little criticism as he and his bandmates tour through North America this month, revealing the U2 trek may upset a few fans of Donald Trump. "I think it will ruffle a few feathers," he smiles. "I think a few people may not like every aspect of the show. We have a history of issues we are interested in like equality and injustice and I don’t want to talk too much about the show but there is quite a lot of content there."
