AceShowbiz - U.S. filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been awarded Spain's prestigious Princess of Asturias award for the arts. The 75-year-old "Goodfellas" director was announced as this year's recipient on Wednesday, April 25, having been chosen by a jury of experts at a meeting in Oviedo, Spain.
Minutes justifying the jury's decision described him as "one of the most outstanding film directors of the movement to renew filmmaking that emerged in the 1970s" and also praised his work restoring and recovering old movies. In addition to the award, he will receive $60,000.
Each year, officials from The Princess of Asturias Foundation, which is named for Spanish royal Leonor, Princess of Asturias, hand eight prizes to distinguished figures in fields including the arts, social sciences, sports and scientific research, with Martin the first 2018 recipient to be named ahead of a ceremony in the autumn.
His fellow directors Francis Ford Coppola and Pedro Almodovar are among the previous winners of the arts award, as well as Bob Dylan, who was honored in 2007.
Over a stellar career spanning more than five decades, Martin has made universally beloved films including "Mean Streets", "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull". His next film, "The Irishman", is a crime drama that reunites him with long-time collaborator Robert De Niro and is due out in 2019.
