AceShowbiz - Prince fans have been treated to the original recording of his song "Nothing Compares 2 U" in the lead up to the second anniversary of his death. The music icon penned the track and laid down the vocals in 1984, six years before Irish singer Sinead O'Connor shared her version and turned it into a global chart smash.

On Thursday, April 19, Prince's estate officials surprised devotees by officially releasing the late star's original studio recording of the tune for the first time Accompanying the song was a video featuring previously unseen footage of Prince and his band The Revolution in rehearsals.

In a statement announcing the news, estate bosses described the piece as "one of his most beloved and iconic compositions."

The song release came hours after Minnesota prosecutors declared there will be no criminal charges filed in connection with the superstar's death from an accidental drug overdose. Authorities believe Prince was unaware he had been taking the painkiller Fentanyl, and had reportedly obtained counterfeit Vicodin pills that were laced with the powerful opioid.

It's not clear who the singer obtained the medication from or how he got his hands on the drug, as he had no prescriptions in his name, leaving investigators little choice but to drop the criminal case.

Prince was found dead in his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota on April 21, 2016. He was 57.
