The network gives the planned adaptation of William Gibson's 2014 sci-fi novel a script-to-series order, meaning that it will be picked straight to series once the script is well received.

AceShowbiz - Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are joining forces once again to develop another sci-fi series. The duo, who is the masterpiece behind HBO's hit series "Westworld", is now bringing 2014's sci-fi novel "The Peripheral" by William Gibson to small screens for Amazon.

The network gives the project a script-to-series order. It means that once the script is well received, the project will be given a straight-to-series order without the traditional pilot process or pay a sizable financial penalty.

Scott B. Smith is tapped to pen the script as well as executive produce the project. Also executive producing alongside Smith are Nolan, Joy and Vincenzo Natali, with the latter, who directed "Dissonance Theory" episode of "Westworld", serving behind the lens. Steven Hoban and Athena Wickham are also among the executive producers.

"The Peripheral" follows Flynne Fisher, a woman in a near future America in which technology has started to subtly alter society. She discovers a hidden connection to a very different reality that also brings her to the dark future of her own.

It is set in such a complicated, non-linear timeline as it is about a time travel, divergent futures, religious protest groups, and a massive corporation called Hefty Mart. It takes place in both an economically-barren U.S. town and in a post-apocalyptic London.

According to Gibson, he found inspiration for the book from a news headline about a Christian militia, film "Winter's Bone" and HBO's "Deadwood". "I wanted the equivalent of the city slickers, from a very different world, turning up in 'Deadwood'," the author previously explained to The Guardian. "Initially I thought the other world would be New York or Los Angeles. But at some point, I realized that could be the future."

The TV adaptation of "The Peripheral" is only one of the many projects Amazon is currently developing. Among them are a TV series spin-off of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and a series based on Iain M. Banks' sci-fi novel "Consider Phlebas".
