The 'Annihilation' actress will star as the title character in the adaptation of the computer game series in addition to being the film producer.

AceShowbiz - After starring in "Annihilation" and leading The CW's drama-comedy series "Jane the Virgin" as the title character, Gina Rodriguez has landed another acting gig. She has been tapped to star in Netflix' live-action adaptation of "Carmen Sandiego" as the title character.

According to Deadline, Gina will also produce the film through her I Can and I Will productions alongside Kevin Misher. Meanwhile, Andy Berman of Misher films and Caroline Fraser will serve as the executive producers. However, the streaming giant has not announced director and writer of the movie.

"Carmen Sandiego" is an educational computer game series that follows Carmen stealing national treasure across the world. The game primarily focuses on teaching geography to children. It also branches out into history, mathematics, language arts and other subjects. Carmen is the main antagonist and the nemesis of the ACME detection agency. Similar to the game, the movie will be a standalone Carmen Sandiego adventure.

This project is an extension of the franchise. Last year, Netflix introduced a new "Carmen Sandiego" animated series that has been dated for a 2019 release. On the series, Gina will lend her voice to the title character.

The owner of the Carmen Sandiego property is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH). Caroline Fraser, who is the executive producer of the feature film, is the the head of HMH Productions.

In addition to having been tapped to voice Carmen Sandiego, Gina will voice Kolka in the upcoming Warner Bros. animated film "Smallfoot". The movie follows a Yeti who is convinced that the elusive creatures called "Smallfoots" (humans) really exist. The movie is set for a release on September 28 in the U.S.

The actress, model, writer, producer and director won several Awards. In 2016, she won CinemaCon Award for Female Star of Tomorrow and Imagen Award for Best Actress-Television for her role on "Jane the Virgin".
