The movie, directed by 'Chronicle' helmer Josh Trank, will chronicle the notorious Chicago gangster's later years after spending several years in prison.

AceShowbiz - Tom Hardy has revealed his first look as Al Capone in "Fonzo". On Sunday, March 25, the Oscar-nominated actor took to his Instagram account to share a photo of him as the notorious Chicago gangster in the upcoming biopic.

Hardy holds one of Capone's famous hats. Unlike Capone's flamboyant look during his rise to prominence, Hardy looks shabby as he wears what looks like a prison garb, showcasing his tattoo on his arm.

The movie is not scheduled to start filming until next month, so it's likely that the image was taken from a screen test or costume fitting. Hardy's transformation into Al Capone is not final either, with the actor teasing Capone's famous scar that he would be sporting in the movie.

"Fonzo" will follow Capone as the ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist. Once the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore, at the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Capone's mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.

Capone reigned as a ruthless mob boss for seven years during the Prohibition Era before he was taken down by Eliot Ness at the age of 33. He died in 1947 at age 48.

The movie will be directed by "Chronicle" helmer Josh Trank, who has a chance to prove himself with the project following his big failure with big movie "Fantastic Four". Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Kathrine Narducci, Linda Cardellini, Noel Fisher and Tilda Del Toro will also star in the movie, which currently doesn't have a release date.

Hardy starred in Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (2017), which earned rave reviews and several nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director at the 90th Academy Awards. The movie bagged three trophies from the ceremony for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.

The British actor recently wrapped up the filming of Spider-Man spin-off movie "Venom (2018)", in which he plays Eddie Brock a.k.a. the titular character. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, it is slated for an October 5 release in the U.S.
