'Out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year,' says Paramount Network in a statement.

AceShowbiz - Fans of classic movie "Heathers" who are anticipating its TV adaptation have to wait a little bit longer for its premiere. Paramount Network has postponed the premiere of the new iteration of the 1988 hit movie in the wake of deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The series was initially scheduled to premiere on March 7, just two weeks after a massacre took place at Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14 and claimed the lives of 17 people. Paramount Network explains in a statement, "Paramount Network's original series 'Heathers' is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society's most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence."

The statement continues, "While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year."

As of now, no new premiere date has been set for "Heathers".

Just like the original movie starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Paramount Network's "Heathers" focuses on the caste system within a high school and includes several acts of violence perpetrated by students. The dark comedy series also features students murdering fellow students.

Newcomer Grace Victoria Cox takes over Winona's role as Veronica, while James Scully plays Veronica's rebel/sociopath boyfriend J.D. who was originally played by Christian in the movie. The titular Heathers are played by Melanie Field (Heather Chandler), Brendan Scannell (Heather Duke) and Jasmine Matthews (Heather McNamara). Original cast member Jason Doherty is set to guest-star in the pilot.

Lesley Headland directed the pilot. Meanwhile, Jason A. Micallef wrote the script and served as showrunner.
