Does 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Novel Confirm Luke Skywalker Had a Wife?

A leaked image of the upcoming novelization of the Rian Johnson-directed movie reveals the novel opens with a line about Luke's wife.

AceShowbiz - Luke Skywalker might not be forever bachelor after all. While he has been living in self-imposed exile in 2017's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", an expanded edition of the novelization of the Rian Johnson-directed movie seems to reveal that Mark Hamill's character had a wife.

The novel will only be released next week, but an image of the leaked copy has made the round on the internet. It reveals the first line of the novel which reads, "Luke Skywalker stood in the cooling sand of Tatooine, his wife by his side."

At first, it seems that the novel confirms that Luke married Mara Jade. However, further reading reveals that the line is part of a dream sequence, in which Luke imagines what his life would have been if he had not left Tatooine and had resisted the call to adventure.

In the old "Star Wars" expanded universe, Mara Jade was an "Emperor's Hand," a special agent of Emperor Palpatine who had sworn to kill Luke to avenge the Emperor's death, but later turned her back on the Empire after Luke helped her break the Emperor's hold. The two then fell in love, married and had a child, Ben Skywalker. Mara Jade, however, has not made the jump to the new "Star Wars" canon.

The expanded edition novelization of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will hit the stores beginning March 6. The film comes to Blu-ray and DVD on March 27. The next installment of the sci-fi film franchise, "Star Wars: Episode IX", will hit theaters across the nation on December 20, 2019. Meanwhile, a standalone movie about the origins of Han Solo, "Solo: A Star Wars Story", is due out on May 25, with Alden Ehrenreich playing young Han.
