Versace Family Rips FX's 'American Crime Story': It's a 'Work of Fiction'
TV

The family of the late fashion designer dubs the upcoming series 'a work of fiction,' adding that it 'has neither authorized nor had any involvement' in the series.

AceShowbiz - The Versace family appears to be distancing itself from the upcoming Ryan Murphy-produced "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story". Just hours before FX held a Los Angeles premiere for the second season of the hit anthology series, the family broke their silence on the show.

"The Versace family has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming TV series about the death of Mr. Gianni Versace," read an official statement. "Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is partly based nor it taken part in the writing of the screenplay, this TV series should only be considered as a work of fiction."

What the family thinks about "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" seemingly didn't affect the relationship between Donatella Versace and Penelope Cruz, who plays her on the series.

The Oscar-winning actress said at the 75th Annual Golden Globes Awards on Sunday, January 7, "When Ryan told me, I said to him, 'This sounds really interesting, but I have to make this call and I have to talk to Donatella.' " She went on sharing, "I called her and we spoke, like, for an hour. I needed that conversation to say yes."

"It was a conversation where, I cannot share everything we talked about, but we have a good relationship," the 43-year-old actress continued, insisting that there's no bad blood between them. "She just sent me flowers before I came here."

Of the 62-year-old fashion icon, Cruz said, "She's such a loving person, so I wanted to put out there the love and respect I have for her. It's in my performance for sure, and I hope that when she sees, she will be happy about it."

Based on the book "Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History" by Maureen Orth, the 10-episode second season will center on the assassination of Gianni Versace in Miami in July 1997. Serial murderer Andrew, who killed five people that year, committed suicide eight days later on a house boat.

Also starring Edgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace, Ricky Martin as Antonio D'Amico and Darren Criss as Andrew Cunanan, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" will premiere on January 17 on FX.
