For the first time, the cable channel announces that the show's eighth and final season will not air until 2019.

AceShowbiz - It's official, "Game of Thrones" will not return until 2019. After long speculation about the air date of the eighth and final season of the hit medieval drama, HBO has finally confirmed that the show is taking a year off and will return with the new season next year.

It's still unclear at what point in 2019 the final season of "Game of Thrones" will air. The series' star Sophie Turner had previously said that the highly-anticipated new season of the fantasy series would come out in 2019.

Filming on the upcoming season began in October last year and will continue until mid-2018. "We're filming right up until the summer," star Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth, told TV Guide in early October.

While the eighth season will have 6 episodes only, it will have longer episodes. Cunningham seemingly confirmed previous reports which said that each episode would be in the neighborhood of 90 minutes. He said, "When you think about it, up until last season we'd have six months to do ten episodes, so we're [doing] way more than that for six episodes. So that obviously will translate into longer episodes."

Not only longer, but also each of the episodes is expected to be epic. According to Variety, the budget for the final episodes of the hit HBO series is much bigger than the standard for expensive TV episodes, with each episode costing $15 million apiece.

As the final season is expected to feature a lot of battle scenes, including a dragon-on-dragon battle between Drogon and his undead brother Viserion in the Great War to Come, the show may require more special effects. The battle scenes will also be costly as there will be the army of the undead, the Dothrakis and more marching soldiers in the war.

With that being said, the final season of "Thrones" is definitely worth the wait.
