Jason Momoa's titular superhero can be seen in the newly-released still fighting a mysterious figure who wears a black armor and wields a sword.

AceShowbiz - A brand new photo from Warner Bros.' upcoming superhero film "Aquaman" has made its way out online. Obtained by USA Today, the photo offers fans a new look at Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry a.k.a. the titular superhero, who appears to be squaring off with a mysterious figure in a black armor.

A shirtless Aquaman can be seen showing off his signature tribal tattoos on his buffed body. He looks tense as he confronts the mysterious figure in front of him. It's unclear if the one he's fighting is Black Manta, who is portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the film, but the person can be seen in the still wielding what looks like a sword.

Momoa first appeared as Aquaman in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", before reprising the role in "Justice League". The latter only dipped into the expansive undersea potential for Momoa's superhero in the DCEU, and director James Wan follows it up with a solo film where Arthur Curry is caught between the surface and the watery kingdom of Atlantis.

Speaking about the Trident-wielding superhero, Wan says, "He doesn't quite fit in, but as the story progresses, he realizes he's the best of both worlds." The helmer explains that "circumstances allow him to grow as a human being and then realize the bigger picture of it all and what it means to have these abilities."

Designing Atlantis has given Wan a chance to "make something that is from our planet but at the same time, it's a visual we're not familiar with." Chief among them is Aquaman's arch-nemesis Black Manta, whose antagonism "is very primal, that classic revenge story," according to the helmer. He adds, "I love the simplicity of that human drive."

"Aquaman" is due out in theaters across the nation on December 21, 2018. Written by Will Beall, it also stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Ludi Lin and Michael Beach.
