'Stranger Things' Creator Is Criticized for Pressuring Child Actress Into an Unscripted Kiss

Sadie Sink revealed she got 'stressed out' when she learned that she had to do a kiss scene with Caleb McLaughlin when it was originally 'not written in the script.'

AceShowbiz - While the new season of "Stranger Things" is highly praised, show creator Ross Duffer is under fire for forcing teen actors to do an unscripted kiss scene. During the second episode of "Beyond Stranger Show", the sci-fi series' after-show, the creator shared an eyebrow-raising behind-the-scenes story about him pressuring cast member Sadie Sink (Max) into the scene.

The episode saw the creators, joined by actors Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo and Sadie, discussing season finale of "Stranger Things" as well as the memorable dance scene. The 15-year-old child actress recalled that the kiss was originally "not written in the script," so when Ross told her she had to it, she got really "stressed out."

"I get there, the first day of Snowball... one of you, I think it was you Ross, you say, 'Ooh, Sadie, you ready for the kiss?' I'm like, 'What! No! That's not in the script... that's not happening,' " she continued. "So the whole day I was like stressed out, I was like oh my god, wait, am I gonna have to... and it didn't happen that day, but then the second day of Snowball."

Ross later chimed in, "You reacted so strongly to this--I was just joking--and you were so freaked out that I was like well, I gotta make her do it now... that's why I'm saying it's your fault." He added, "Anyway, it's great. I can't imagine without it. Thank you."

A fan later took to Twitter to call out Ross, writing, "There is something messed up in the 2nd ep of the #StrangerThings aftershow that I want to address." She added in a separate tweet, "The director, an adult man, saw that a teen girl was uncomfortable with a situation, which made him MORE EAGER to put her in the situation."

"And then he (still laughing) says it's HER fault. A director's job is to get the best performances from their actors AND make sure they feel safe and comfortable," the angry fan went on saying. "Even if it started as a 'joke,' it's still gross and inappropriate."

Another fan similarly wrote, "I feel completely different watching #StrangerThings now that I know the Duffers bullied Sadie Sink into a kiss she was uncomfortable with." Obviously against the idea of forcing Sadie to do the unscripted kiss scene, another fan called the Duffer bros "problematic," as "now, we find out Sadie wasn't comfortable with the kiss."
