Cher Returning to Big Screen With 'Mamma Mia!' Sequel

The 71-year-old legendary singer has joined the cast of the upcoming follow-up to the 2008 ABBA musical.

AceShowbiz - %cCher% has signed on to join Universal's "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!". The music icon has been posting tweets teasing her involvement in the upcoming sequel to Phyllida Lloyd-directed "Mamma Mia!" and Variety has confirmed that she's been added to the cast.

Details about her role are still kept under wraps, but the Oscar-winning actress has hinted that she will have to dance in the follow-up to the 2008 %cABBA% musical. In the tweets she posted over the weekend, Cher wrote lyrics to ABBA's "Fernando" and said, "Just went through two dance numbers. Everyone's great," prompting us to speculate that she was rehearsing for the movie.

The 71-year-old legendary singer also posted a pic of ABBA-style platform shoes to make the announcement official. She simply captioned the image with a kiss mark emoji.

In the film written and directed by Ol Parker, Cher will join returning cast members including %cMeryl Streep% as Donna, %cAmanda Seyfried% as Sophie, %cDominic Cooper% as Sky, %cPierce Bronsan% as Sam, %cStellan Skarsgard% as Bill, %cColin Firth% as Harry, %cJulia Walters% as Rosie and %cChristine Baranski% as Tanya.

Newcomers in the film franchise are %cAndy Garcia%, %cLily James%, %cAlexa Davies%, %cJessica Keenan Wynn%, %cJeremy Irvine%, %cJosh Dylan% and %cHugh Skinner%. The sequel is said to go back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.

"Here We Go Again!" is scheduled to be released in theaters across the nation on July 20 next year, within days of the 10th anniversary of the original's release. The movie began filming in September in the U.K. and Croatia.

Littlestar's Judy Craymer and Playtone's Gary Goetzman, who produced the original, are re-teaming for the sequel. Craymer was also the creator and producer of the stage musical. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are on board again to provide music and lyrics as well as executive produce, with Universal's Kristen Lowe and Lexi Barta overseeing production for the studio.
