The production label has acquired the rights to the Dutch horror short and will adapt it into a feature film with the 'Conjuring' director producing.

AceShowbiz - James Wan has had huge success producing other filmmakers' work, especially with the likes of David F. Sandberg's short-to-feature film "Lights Out". And now the talented filmmaker is looking to repeat the winning act by re-teaming with New Line Cinema to develop new horror thriller "Sweet Tooth".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production label and the famed filmmaker have picked up the rights to the horror short, which was written and directed by Dutch filmmaker Nico van den Brink. Wan has signed on to produce the feature film, teaming up with Chris Bender, whose horror credits include "The Final Destination" and "The Butterfly Effect".

New Line is gearing up to look for a writer to pour over the short's concept to a feature film. The development of the latest project is similar to that of the label's highly-successful 2016 thriller "Lights Out", which grossed nearly $150 million worldwide on a $5 million budget. The studio hired Swedish director Sandberg to helm the movie which was based on his 2013 short film of the same name, with Wan producing along with Lawrence Grey and Eric Heisserer.

The "Sweet Tooth" short, premiered in July at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, centers on a woman who comes home to her large apartment tenement. Watching the news, she discovers that her neighbors -- a mother and her two kids -- have been killed, but then enters creep-zone territory when she begins to hear the laughter and running of the munchkins.

Van den Brink is an award-winning director who studied at the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands Film Academy. He has directed a number of short films and ads, but will make his full-length debut with "Sweet Tooth", which has yet to set a release date. Wan, meanwhile, is currently busy working on "Aquaman", which is due out in the U.S. on October 5 next year.
