The 'Broadchurch' actress will play the 13th incarnation of the time lord, replacing the current one Peter Capaldi.

AceShowbiz - It's about time! A female finally gets to play the lead role on "Doctor Who". Jodie Whittaker is confirmed to play the 13th incarnation of the titular time lord on the British series. She becomes the first woman to play the titular doctor since the show's 1963 debut.
The announcement was made after the final of Wimbledon men's singles. Whittaker, known for her role on the series "Broadchurch", is set to replace Peter Capaldi who succeeded Matt Smith back in 2013. She will take over the role in the upcoming Christmas special.
"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey with Chris [Chibnall, new writer and executive producer] and with every Whovian on this planet," she said. "It's more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
