"Just another example of Hollywood talking down to Americans. They hate this country & their fans. #FabricatedRacism sadly returns @wayansjr," @ViperNtheTemple wrote, to which Damon responded, "A joke some took too personally." He continued, "So what. Jokes aren't illegal."

Some users, however, didn't take his tweet as a joke. "Not illegal, but offensive & hateful," tweeted @WTPatty. @Spilstead added, "Hateful much?"

Many of the users pointed out that both White and Black men fought together to end the slavery. @cacho_jana wrote, "Black men and white men died for black freedom and emancipation!!! Deadliest war ever fought was amongst ourselves."

Things quickly went messy and personal as @JasonSMoonen threw a subtle shade at the actor and wrote, "Enjoy what's left of your already s****y career that your dad created for you," making reference to Damon's father Damon Wayans, whose breakthrough came as a co-creator and performer on his own sketch comedy show, "In Living Color". Damon replied the tweet in sarcasm, "Thanks Jason :) . Will do :)."
